English IV A - First Six Weeks - Beowulf

Below are the assignments you need to complete for the first six weeks of English IV.
1. Old English Vocabulary - Complete the vocabulary list below. You may either print and fill in the sheet or hand write the vocabulary on separate paper.

2. Quia Quiz over Old English Vocabulary - Follow the link below to take the Quia quiz over Old English Vocabulary. You will need to register for Quia first. You may take this quiz more than once (but you may need to let me know to reset it , especially if you take it multiple times).

3. History of English Notes - Read through the website below and take Cornell Notes over the information contained therein. You may print the Cornell Notes template provided below and take your notes there, or you may complete the notes on separate paper, but you MUST follow the Cornell template provided including all parts.

4. Kennings Assignment - complete the assignment about kennings that asks you to create and use kennings in a sentence. Make sure you follow the directions. You may print the sheet and write your answers on it, or write your answers on separate paper.

5. Shrink Lit: Beowulf Assignment - Shrink Lit is a type of literature where a long story is shrunk down to a much smaller size. This assignment gives you an example and asks you to create rhymed couplets which are two line poems that rhyme with each other (although in this case several couplets will be used to together). Make sure you follow the directions. Ask for help if needed.

6. The Anglo-Saxon Boast Assignment - The Boast was an important part of Anglo-Saxon Literature (and indeed many other literary traditions). This assignment will take you through the process of creating your own Anglo-Saxon style boast. Make sure you follow the directions. You may print the sheet and write your answers on it, or write your answers on separate paper.

7. Beowulf Plot Chart - After reading Beowulf, complete the plot chart provided. You may print the sheet and write your answers on it, or write your answers on separate paper. Full text and Summaries of Beowulf are provided below, as well as movie clips at the bottom of the page.

*Major Grade*: Monster Research - First complete the Research Guide over monsters. When you have finished the research guide, you will write an essay (two pages hand written or one page typed) either about the monster you researched or the purpose/value of monsters/ heroes in stories. You may also discuss the presence of the battle between good and evil, which is a common theme in monster stories.
